Horse stories span breeding, policy, community events

A Colorado ranching history highlights how Quentin and Evelyn Semotan built a horse-breeding operation after the Great Depression, with their stallion Star Duster gaining fame by defeating Poco Bueno in championship competitions. In Ocala, miniature therapy horse Magic celebrated her 20th birthday at a gala where the city proclaimed Oct. 10 “Gentle Carousel’s Magic Day,” and a signed Garth Brooks guitar raised $15,000 for the nonprofit. In Kolkata, officials plan to introduce five battery-powered carriages this winter as part of a proposed phaseout of horse-drawn carriages; animal-welfare groups support the change, while carriage owners question its appeal to tourists and say they will resist it. Woodside-area horse owners are also planning an annual Day of the Horse celebration, with a trail ride and a horse fair featuring pony rides and demonstrations.
