Hiker Dies, Nine Injured in Utah Lightning Strike

A 19-year-old hiker died and several others were injured Friday after lightning struck a small metal shelter near the summit of Utah’s Mount Timpanogos during a thunderstorm. The group had reached the summit before seeking refuge inside the structure, and search-and-rescue crews responded around 6 a.m. amid difficult weather and terrain conditions. Officials said the victim was critically injured and later pronounced dead, while the other hikers sustained minor injuries and were evacuated. Authorities warned that mountain storms can develop quickly and advised hikers to leave exposed peaks and ridgelines when they hear thunder, noting that small shelters may not provide adequate lightning protection.
