Hartford Plans Walk Honoring Black Civil War Soldiers
Hartford plans a November 21 memorial walk retracing the 1865 homecoming parade of Connecticut’s 29th and 30th Colored Regiments, whose soldiers returned from the Civil War to a state that had recently rejected a measure to remove a racial restriction from voter qualifications. Other accounts honor military service through the story of Korean War veteran Chester Hopper, whose deteriorating roof was replaced free by veterans’ and community organizations, and that of Army veteran Chuck Roberts, who later ran a museum and wrote military-history books. In Vietnam’s Vinh Yen ward, more than 42 young people have applied to volunteer for 2027 military service, viewing enlistment as a chance to develop discipline and serve their country.
