Google Nears Billion-Dollar Nuclear Power Deal for AI
Bloomberg reports Alphabet is close to a multi-year deal to pay Constellation Energy at least $1 billion for nuclear power, with an announcement possible as soon as this week. The talks are private; Google and Constellation declined to comment Monday. Deal capacity and the plants that would supply it have not been disclosed. The move would follow Amazon’s agreement last week to buy 690 megawatts from Constellation, including capacity from a Calvert Cliffs upgrade in Maryland, and would add to Google’s existing nuclear arrangements with NextEra Energy on the Duane Arnold reactor in Iowa and with Southern Company on upgrades at two Georgia plants. Microsoft’s 2024 deal with Constellation is tied to Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania. Sources disagree on that plant’s restart timing, with some saying next year and another saying 2027. Recent tech nuclear deals have focused on existing or restarted plants because new construction can take a decade or more to permit and build. Whether Google and Constellation sign, and on what terms, is not yet confirmed.
