GM Debuts New V-8 Engines for 2027 Pickups

"It's a bit different than adding a hybrid system to an existing powertrain and trying to get the efficiency out of something like that," GM President Mark Reuss said of the diesel approach. The trucks had been unveiled earlier in summer 2026 without engine details. New 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter V-8s replace the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter units at 402 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque and 481 horsepower and 501 pound-feet. The 2.7-liter TurboMax four-cylinder rises to 350 horsepower and 455 pound-feet with a new 10-speed transmission. The Duramax 3.0-liter diesel remains at 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet after new pistons, injectors, a revised turbo vane, and a new NOx sensor, and can exceed 900 miles of highway range with a larger optional tank. Maximum towing reaches 13,700 pounds on the Silverado and 13,500 on the Sierra; maximum payload is 2,340 pounds on the 2.7-liter. Reuss noted diesel had topped $6 a gallon the prior week. Ford's four-wheel-drive hybrid F-150 averages 23 miles per gallon by federal rating; GM's four-wheel-drive diesel Silverado and Sierra rate 24 mpg and about $1,050 yearly at 15,000 miles. A Ford spokesman said, "We're going to do what's right for F-150 customers, regardless of what the competition says or does."
