France, UK negotiate end to migrant deal
France and the United Kingdom are moving to end their “one in, one out” migration pilot, which sent some people arriving in Britain by small boat back to France while allowing an equal number of asylum seekers with British family ties to enter legally. The arrangement is expected to expire at the start of October, despite British efforts to extend it. France has argued that responsibility for people returned across the Channel should be shared among EU countries, while British officials have said they wanted the deal to continue but acknowledged it was difficult to scale up and involved relatively small numbers. The two governments have also differed over its effectiveness as a deterrent to crossings.
