Jon Watts Attached to Direct Star Wars Trilogy Opener

Jon Watts is attached to direct the first film in a new Star Wars trilogy written by Simon Kinberg, who is expected to produce all three. The Hollywood Reporter reported it on September 26, 2026, after Daniel Richtman first reported the information. The trilogy is intended to continue the Skywalker Saga after The Rise of Skywalker, potentially as Episodes X through XII, with Daisy Ridley expected to return as Rey in some capacity. It has not received Disney's official greenlight. Watts co-created and directed episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew in 2024 and directed the Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy. The next scheduled Star Wars film is Shawn Levy's Starfighter for May 2027, starring Ryan Gosling. Kathleen Kennedy told Deadline in January 2026 that Kinberg finished a detailed treatment of about 70 pages and was expected to give further material in March, and described Soderbergh's project as on the back burner. Adam Driver told the Associated Press in October 2025 that he and Steven Soderbergh presented The Hunt for Ben Solo to Lucasfilm, which loved the idea, but Bob Iger and Alan Bergman said no; they did not see how Ben Solo was alive.
