Weinstein sentenced to 15 years after New York retrial conviction

Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 15 years in prison in New York for sexually assaulting former television production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006. Haley told the court the assault had a lasting, devastating effect on her life, while Weinstein apologized for any harm he may have caused but continued to deny wrongdoing. The sentence followed his 2025 retrial conviction after New York’s highest court overturned his original 2020 convictions and 23-year sentence on fair-trial grounds. Prosecutors had sought 20 years, citing the harm to Haley and alleging Weinstein tried to influence public opinion and potential jurors through a proposed $1.75 million media arrangement; his lawyers sought leniency because of his poor health. Weinstein also remains subject to proceedings in California, where his separate rape conviction was upheld but his sentence was ordered to be reconsidered.
