Engineer Sentenced 32 Months for Bitcoin Extortion
Daniel Rhyne, a former infrastructure engineer at a New Jersey industrial company, was sentenced to 32 months in prison after pleading guilty to damaging the company’s network and attempting to extort it. In November 2023, he used unauthorized access and scheduled tasks to delete administrator accounts, reset passwords across hundreds of servers and thousands of workstations, and disrupt operations. He demanded 20 bitcoin—then worth about $750,000—and threatened further shutdowns; investigators traced the attack to a rogue virtual machine on the company’s network. The case highlights how poorly controlled privileged access can enable serious insider attacks, underscoring the importance of limiting administrative privileges and monitoring unusual account and network changes.
