Ducks hand Flames worst-ever 0-5 start
Ryan Poehling broke a 2-2 tie at 5:35 of the third with a short-handed shot slid past Dustin Wolf as Anaheim beat Calgary 4-2 on Saturday. The loss left the Flames 0-5, the worst season-opening streak in franchise history. Poehling then lost his footing when Zayne Parekh slid into him, crashed into the goalpost, and was helped off with an apparent knee injury. Jackson LaCombe scored first on a power play midway through the opening period. Morgan Frost answered five minutes later. Frank Vatrano restored Anaheim's lead with 45 seconds left in the first. Aydar Suniev, a 2023 third-round pick in his ninth NHL game, tied it at 2-2 with 2:06 left in the second from a Matt Coronato pass for his first career goal, drawing a strong crowd reaction. Nikita Nesterenko scored insurance with 2:57 remaining. Ville Husso made 27 saves in his first start of the season; Wolf stopped 24. Cutter Gauthier exited after limited ice time with an upper-body injury, and Kevin Bahl's open-ice hit on Sam Colangelo on his first shift was reviewed. Rated outlets agree on the score, scorers and 0-5 franchise mark; they differ on which secondary details to feature. AP framed a home-and-home series.
