Channing Tatum Says Vulnerability Is Hardest Part of Fatherhood

Channing Tatum said at a Toronto International Film Festival Q&A on September 13, after a Josephine screening, that telling his daughter he is not okay is one of fatherhood’s toughest parts. He recalled telling Everly, after he was hurt, “I’m just not okay right now,” and said parents want to be like Superman but sometimes cannot. Tatum, 46, and Jenna Dewan share joint custody of Everly, born May 2013; they separated in 2018 and divorced in September 2024. Josephine stars Mason Reeves as an 8-year-old who witnesses a crime in Golden Gate Park; Tatum plays Damien and Gemma Chan plays Claire. It won Sundance Grand Jury and Audience Awards after its February premiere, screened at Berlin, and opens November 20. Tatum cried five, six, or seven times at Sundance and cited a window-drawing scene that made him think of his own child. On The Kelly Clarkson Show he said Everly urged him to take an Australia role keeping him away almost two months. Gemma Chan said the cast bonded on park trips, hikes, and nail sessions. Tatum said he returned from a press trip to find Everly a full-on teenager after starting seventh grade.
