TSMC explores Texas expansion, Terafab talks
TSMC CEO C.C. Wei said at the company's Oct. 15, 2026 earnings conference that TSMC has expanded capacity consideration beyond Arizona, that Texas is the option under review, and that teams were sent there to evaluate. He said TSMC also talked with customer Terafab about using that planned capacity. Wei said the company raised U.S. investment to US$265 billion in July, posted record net profit of NT$763.06 billion (US$23.65 billion) last quarter, and guided current-quarter revenue to US$52.3-54.3 billion with full-year growth of about 44% in dollar terms, citing rising AI demand. CONTESTED: Wei said any fab has got to be run by TSMC. Musk has said Terafab would build and operate the facility, with TSMC only able to sub-lease part of its cleanroom. Tom's Hardware reported a potential compromise under discussion in which Terafab owns the facility and leases a portion to TSMC, which would independently operate its production lines. Wei said talks continue and TSMC will share any solid conclusion. No agreement has been announced.
