Bird Flu Confirmed in Racine County Flock
Wisconsin officials confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza in a backyard poultry flock in Racine County. The birds were depopulated and will not enter the food supply. The virus can spread through infected birds, wild birds and their droppings, and contaminated equipment or clothing; officials say it is highly contagious and often fatal to domestic poultry. DATCP urges livestock owners to strengthen biosecurity, including disinfecting equipment, limiting access to animals, separating new flock additions for 30 days and keeping poultry indoors when possible.
