BioNTech to close three German plants after failing to find buyers
BioNTech said on September 28, 2026 that it will close manufacturing sites in Idar-Oberstein, Marburg and Tübingen after a sales process begun in May failed to find buyers. About 1,800 employees are affected; Yahoo Finance cites up to 1,860 positions. The German sites are scheduled to close between late 2027 and late 2028. The company also plans to shut its Singapore facility and is transferring COVID-19 vaccine production to Pfizer. A company spokesperson said that despite the best efforts of all those involved and a wide-ranging sales process, it had unfortunately not been possible to finalise a sale. BioNTech cited market and investment conditions. That failure clears the way for the planned wind-down as the firm moves away from pandemic-era vaccine capacity toward oncology and mRNA cancer work. BioNTech and employee representatives agreed on additional severance terms; details were not disclosed. Headquarters remain in Mainz. Full buyer identities and a Singapore closure timetable were not given.
