I-80 Crashes Kill One, Injure Two CHP Officers
A fatal crash and a separate collision involving a Tesla injured two California Highway Patrol officers on eastbound Interstate 80 near Fairfield late Tuesday. In the first crash, a 19-year-old San Pablo man lost control of his Honda Civic and was struck by a Chevrolet Tahoe; he later died at a hospital, and investigators said alcohol did not appear to be a factor. About an hour later, a Tesla driven by a 22-year-old Sacramento man passed through flares and cones marking the scene and struck a patrol car occupied by two officers. The officers were hospitalized and later released; investigators have not determined whether the Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature was active. Both crashes remain under investigation, and the eastbound lanes reopened Wednesday morning.
