Artis Gilmore announces Jacksonville City Council bid
Basketball Hall of Famer Artis Gilmore has entered the race for Jacksonville City Council’s at-large Group 3 seat as a Democrat, challenging Republican incumbent and council president Nick Howland in the 2027 election. The longtime Jacksonville University administrator says he wants to give back to the city that supported him, with priorities including education and special-needs programs, affordability for families and seniors, and better parks, roads and neighborhoods. Howland welcomed Gilmore to the contest and said his campaign will focus on his record and plans for the city. Gilmore is seeking elected office for the first time after a celebrated basketball career that included 11 All-Star selections.
