Arizona AG sues TikTok over alleged youth addiction
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has sued TikTok in Maricopa County Superior Court. The complaint alleges the company violated Arizona's Consumer Fraud Act by designing its platform to foster compulsive use among children and teens. It points to features such as infinite scrolling, autoplay, reward loops, notifications, social-comparison metrics and appearance-altering filters. The suit says algorithms and moderation practices expose minors to harmful or age-inappropriate content. Mayes alleges TikTok failed to disclose risks including depression, anxiety, sleep disruption, disordered eating, body-image distress and self-harm, misled parents about safety measures, and that company leaders concealed research about the platform's addictive effects. TikTok disputes the allegations and says it will defend itself. The filing adds to a wider wave of lawsuits against TikTok and other social media companies over alleged harm to young users.
