Abyei Clashes Kill 26, Injure 82

At least 26 people were killed and 82 injured in fighting between Ngok Dinka and Misseriya communities at Amiet Common Market in Abyei. The violence followed the killing of a Ngok Dinka man on Monday and a Misseriya man on Tuesday. The force reinforced security around Abyei town. Lieutenant General Ganesh Kumar Shreshta said UNISFA is engaging leaders of both communities who reiterated commitment to dialogue and a peaceful resolution, with priority on preventing further loss of life. A UNISFA statement on X said the force is taking all measures to protect civilians and prevent retaliation. UNISFA fields 3,000 police and soldiers. Abyei is oil-rich territory jointly administered by Sudan and South Sudan. Misseriya pastoralists migrate there in the dry season, and clashes over grazing and water are recurrent.
