A Pigeon Distraction
The woman stood near the shops and watched a small girl who looked about three years old resist every suggestion her mother made. The child moved away from the pram and showed no interest in settling down. The woman stepped forward and spoke to the girl about the value of listening to her mother. After a short exchange she understood that this direct approach was not helping the situation at all. A pigeon walked across the floor of the shopping centre a short distance away. The woman pointed it out and began to offer simple ideas about where the bird might be headed. She said the pigeon could be on its way to buy a donut or perhaps to get its feathers done. The child found the picture of a bird shopping amusing and replied that the pigeon really belonged in a tree. The woman agreed with that observation. They kept the conversation going for two or three minutes while the child stayed focused on the bird. The mother stood nearby and waited without pressure. Once the girl had settled, she agreed to climb into the pram. Together they decided the pigeon had moved on to the cafe for a coffee and a strawberry donut. The mother expressed clear relief that she could now continue with her errands. The brief pause had given her room to regain her composure. The woman who had spoken to the child felt thankful that the pigeon had appeared at that particular time. Pigeons often pass through the centre without drawing much notice, yet this one had served a useful purpose. The mother pushed the pram forward while the child remained content. The woman continued on her own way through the centre. No further words were exchanged between the adults. The small event ended without any lasting complication. Later the woman recalled the moment when she first noticed the pigeon and chose to speak about it. She had not planned the distraction ahead of time. The idea came from watching the bird move across the open floor. That single change in focus had been enough to shift the child's attention. The mother and child moved out of sight among the other shoppers. The pigeon continued its path across the tiles. The woman carried the memory of the brief exchange as she finished her own visit to the centre. She left with the sense that an ordinary bird had made a practical difference during an ordinary afternoon.
