NYC Plans AI Ban for K–8 Students

New York City will ban AI use for students from kindergarten through eighth grade and impose strict screen-time limits, with AI becoming available in ninth grade only for approved educational activities; teachers will still be allowed to use AI for lesson planning, and companion chatbots are barred. The policy, prompted by concerns over mental health and development and following criticism of earlier guidelines, will be refined after stakeholder feedback with a report due to inform the final rules.
