Pope Leo XIV has appointed Auxiliary Bishop Michael A. Saporito of Newark as the new Bishop of Metuchen, filling the diocese’s vacancy since November 2025 when the former bishop moved to become Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans. Saporito, a Newark native with three decades of North Jersey ministry and experience as an auxiliary bishop, previously led evangelization initiatives and will now lead a diocese that has been administrated by Very Rev. Jonathan Toborowsk since Checchio’s departure.
