Astronomers have identified a giant 10-sided decagon in Saturn’s southern atmosphere, likely forming between 2017 and 2023 and continuing to evolve, with sides surpassing 10,000 miles. The feature, observed via Hubble and ground-based telescopes and published in Science Advances, drifts eastward about 6 mph and challenges the view that Saturn’s north-pole hexagon is unique by revealing a more complex, dual-pole meteorology.
