UM Hosts Global Papyrus Conservation Seminar

Scholars from nine countries gathered at the University of Michigan for a 10-day Papyrus Conservation Summer Seminar, the only program of its kind in the Americas, to learn techniques for preserving fragile papyrus fragments. Participants work with magnifier headbands and delicate tools to remove dirt, control moisture, and stabilize texts from 1000 B.C.E. to 1000 C.E.—including Homer, the Odyssey and Epistles of Paul—guided by Marieka Kaye as they practice careful handling and documentation to preserve original evidence for future study.
