Public asked to report blue land crab sightings

State marine biologists along the Carolinas are asking the public to report sightings of the non-native blue land crab, which has been increasingly observed in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia; first confirmed NC sighting was in 2023, with 23 confirmed and 34 unconfirmed reports, including two this year in Emerald Isle. The crabs vary in color, are difficult to catch, can live up to 11 years, and researchers say public reports help track their spread and potential environmental impact.
