Texas Comptroller Don Huffines is seeking to double the private school voucher program to about $2 billion for 2028–29, including a $1 billion base funding boost and $226 million to support current participants, as waitlisted families and expanding participation drive demand. The plan, which 70% of current or invited participants previously attended private or homeschool settings, faces criticism from the Texas State Teachers Association and will be reviewed by lawmakers when the two-year budget is tackled in January.
