If you love to cook, chances are your beloved kitchen may need a little TLC. Even if you're a self-proclaimed clean-freak, it can be hard to keep your stovetop looking clean and new. No matter how well you think you've cleaned after cooking a meal, the grates on your stove have an affinity for food spills and oil.
Things can get pretty messy while cooking, especially near the stove. If your grates have seen better days, this trick is for you. Thankfully, this hack is incredibly easy and will leave your kitchen stove shining!
You'll need Ziplock baggies and household ammonia to get started. Both are very cost efficient and simple to find at your local supermarket. In addition to the ammonia and the baggies, you'll need a good pair of rubber gloves to protect your hands.
It's helpful to have all your cooking done for the evening before you try this trick, as you'll need a full eight hours to let the ammonia get to work. Doing this trick at night is ideal, as you can let the bags sit and resume in the morning.
The first step is to take off your dirty stove grates and place them in their own individual plastic baggies. Looking closer at your supplies, you may even see more grime on your grates, but don't worry -- all that gunk is on its way out.
Once the grates are securely in the baggies, pour in 1/4 cup of ammonia per bag and seal the top. Make sure to flip the bag so the top of the grate is face down, therefore having as much contact with the ammonia as possible. This also ensures that you don't waste any ammonia, as you're using just enough to coat the grate.
Now is where the element of time comes in. Let the grates sit in the ammonia bags for a full eight hours.
Once the eight hours is up, put on the rubber gloves and take the grates out of the ammonia bags. You'll see most of the grime has fallen off the grates already and is sitting in the bottom of the bag. Not too appetizing, we know, but this is much better (and healthier) than having it stuck on your cooktop.
Next, scrub the remaining grease and grime off with a soapy sponge and water. You'll be amazed to see how easily the remaining residue washes away.
As you scrub the rest of the grime off, you'll notice how your grates will look newer and shiner. They will have a less foggy look as the dirt, oil and old food particles are now a distant memory. Your family will surely notice the difference, too!

To keep up the shine and cleanliness of your grates, use this trick once a month. Your cooktop will not only look better, but the surface will be healthier, as the ammonia kills any potentially hazardous bacteria. Try this trick for yourself and see the difference it will make on your grates.
