Family Turns Wood Pallets Into Amazing Flooring
Marilyn Caylor 2/20/2016
This family saved pallets for months on end, waiting until they could collect enough slats to upgrade to wood floors in their kitchen and dining room. The results of their efforts were simply amazing.
An anonymous family decided to upgrade the floors in their kitchen and dining room to all-wood. However, the upgrade needed to be a low cost project. That meant gathering all the materials and doing the labor themselves.
Luckily, the family knew someone who could provide them with free wood. The pallets they gathered originally supported tubs of imported coconut oil. Now, it just kept piling up in the garage.
Thousands Of Nails
Every single nail had to be removed from each slat, and over 9000 were pulled. I think this wee little man did most of the work!
Did They Miss Any?
It was extremely important that they did not miss a single nail, which could ruin the wood planing machine. Since they were borrowing the use of the machine from a friend, just one nail could put a dent in their friendship!
Off To The Woodshop
When the collection of wood was great enough in quantity, it was time to transfer it to a friend's woodshop. Here, the slats would be sized down to five inches wide and one-half inch thick.
The slats were starting to look more finished, as the soon-to-be-flooring made its way back to the family home.
Layering The First Boards
The first boards were layered onto the sub-floor, and things were starting to come together nicely.
Assistance was never far away, and this little guy made another appearance to help with the project. Either that, or he was secretly making his own little playhouse out of all the freely available wood!
Pristine Dining Room
After a lot of elbow grease, the dining room floor was finally finished. A semi-gloss was applied to bring out the beauty of the wood.
The kitchen was also finished using the same wood slats.
The Makeover Is Done
After 18 months of hard work, the project was finally complete!
Due to the variations in colors and types of wood that was originally collected, the flooring ended up with a very unique range of beautiful hues. This is something that could not be duplicated with mass-produced wood flooring.
It Pays To Save
This lucky family got a huge payout not only in saving the materials needed for this project, but they also saved a lot of dollars in labor by doing the work themselves. The results are truly incredible!
