Polar Bears Get Snow

The polar bears at the San Diego Zoo got a special surprise in December. Thanks to donors, their Polar Bear Plunge exhibit was transformed into a different wonderland.
Donors who contributed to the animal care wish list on the San Diego Zoo website made this all possible. Nearly 26 tons of snow was brought into the exhibit, covering the area completely. Kalluk, Tatqiq, and Chinook, the three polar bears living in the zoo, enjoyed themselves greatly with the glistening snow. They rolled around, slid down the banks, shook it off, then started all over again.
This was important enrichment for the bears, since it stimulated them, kept them active, and promoted natural behaviors. To add to the enrichment and fun, the staff also spread around yams, carrots, melons, and beef femur bones throughout the exhibit. The bears pounced and dug for their prizes. As the senior keeper, Susan Purtell, said, "This was a special day for the polar bears, and I could tell they really loved it". How great to see the polar bears frolicking in the snow, able to showcase their natural behaviors.
