As any mother would be, Jillian was thrilled to learn she was pregnant with a baby boy. And just like any woman does when they find out they are pregnant, she instantly went into baby planning mode, and couldn't be happier. She picked out a name for her son early on, deciding to call him Robert.
As the weeks pressed on, while baby Robert was developing in Jillian's womb, everything seemed to be on schedule, and she was having a healthy pregnancy. Then one day Jillian went in for a regular checkup, only to have her world turned completely upside down. At 19 weeks pregnant, Jillian's baby boy was diagnosed with hydrocephalus.
Hydrocephalus is considered to be a fatal illness, as the baby's brain can fill up with water. The water buildup can lead to the brain becoming swollen up to triple the size that is should be. Jillian instantly went from pure happiness, into sheer panic mode.
To make matters even more stressful and worrisome, the doctors were advising Jillian to terminate her pregnancy because of it. They told Jillian that even if Robert did somehow miraculously survive the birth, that his condition would have an effect on his quality of life.
Jillian went against what the doctors advised however, and decided to have faith instead. She had a lot of support from her friends and family members, and prayed a lot during this time. She was determined to give Robert a fighting chance, and held onto her faith leading up to the successful birth of her baby boy. Jillian and Robert proved everyone wrong.
Despite what doctors originally believed, Robert is now six-years-old and is in first grade. He is developing just fine, and is very smart. He plays the piano, plays on his iPad, reads, and knows his colors, numbers, and shapes just like his fellow peers do. He has definitely defied the odds that were originally against him.
Although his condition has never gone completely away, Robert has fought through several brain surgeries to try and help. He uses a walker and a wheelchair, but is one determined boy! He is a fighter, and according to Jillian, he continues to strive to be just a regular, everyday kid.
Robert is one tenacious little boy who refuses to give up, despite the obstacles that have been placed in his life. Jillian has never regretted her decision to not terminate her pregnancy. After all, Robert is her son, and deserves a chance to live just like everyone else does.
