I Never Knew It Meant Something When Dogs Did This. Did You?

At times, it's hard to know what a dog wants when he drops a dirty ball in your lap or stares at you for no reason. But, thanks to this new translation guide, we can now understand man's best friend!
He Brings You Gifts... Because He Thinks You Need Stuff
What does it mean when he drops a slobber-covered ball right into your lap? What's going through his canine brain when he brings you a dirty stick he found in the yard? Your little hunter is showing off his prowess and wants to give you a present. It just so happens that those gifts are things he could probably use too. He's clever that way!
She Takes Over The Bed... Because It's Time To Snuggle Up!
Why does she lay down flat on her tummy and spread her legs out in all four directions? This little bed-hog has her own pet pad, so why is she taking over yours? Well, it's doesn't have anything to do with a territorial instinct. She just wants to be with other members of her pack. So, if you're in bed, then she wants to be right there with you.
He Sits Right On Top Of Your Feet... Ummm, That's Because You're HIS
Yes, that's right. Your alpha doggie owns you, or at least he thinks he does. He's claiming you as part of his pack, and asserting himself as the leader. Alternatively, it could mean he just wants to reassure himself that you're still there. It just depends on your dog's personality in this case.
She Puts Her Paw Up In The Air... Let The Hunt Begin!
This is actually a sign of concentration. She has something planned in that canine head of hers, and is getting ready to pounce on something. Better get out of the way!
He Yawns... Well This Could Mean Any Number Of Things
What's your little furry guy trying to tell you? Well dogs yawn for the same reasons we do. He needs coffee. He could be tired or bored. Or, if he's nervous around other dogs and people, he may yawn to express that anxiety. If someone else in the room happens to be yawning, he could just be playing along and mimicking their action. Dogs are funny that way!
She Trashes Your Couch... Because She's Bored Or Anxious
Many new dog owners have seen this happen. She could be suffering from separation anxiety while you're away from home, especially if she's a new dog you just brought home. New puppies or grown ups can also become bored while you're away, and this is their way of entertaining themselves. Try taking them for walks and playing with them in the yard as much as possible to wear down their unlimited source of energy.
He Leans Against Your Legs... Because He Needs Quick Reassurance
Dogs experience the same gamut of emotions that their human owners do. If your dog is standing close by and leaning against your legs, it means he needs reassurance that he's safe and nothing bad will happen. It also means he wants to be as close to you as possible, and is seeking as much affection as you're willing to give.
She Hunches Over... Awww, Poor Little Girl Is Scared!
If a dog hunches over, they are trying to make themselves as small and unnoticeable as possible. This is a very basic survival instinct, and is usually the type of behavior found in abused animals. So if you have recently adopted a rescue dog, be gentle and patient with her - and give her as many hugs and kisses as possible!
He Stares At You... It's Because He Loves You!
Just like teenagers will sneak glances at their new crush in the school cafeteria, your little pup will do the same. Only, he isn't so subtle about it. He knows he loves you and he's going to stare as long and hard as he wants! If he still looks at you with an unblinking gaze when you leave the house, it means he trusts that you will come back to him, safe and sound.
Dogs are considered man's best friend for good reason. While the unspoken communication doesn't always translate well, we can certainly understand what they are trying to tell us most of the time. For the times we can't comprehend what they are trying to tell us, the guessing game certainly brings a smile to our face!
