Lucky the Labrador was down on his luck. After his owners abandoned him in a flood, he could only watch as the waters kept rising around him. Scared, and with nowhere to go, he whimpered and barked as loudly as he could. Luckily, his pleas were heard by Alex Scroggins.
Alex was helping his mother and sister gather what few belongings they could take with them. He noticed a neighbor's dog standing on a porch, but thought the owners must be somewhere nearby. After a few trips back and forth in his small boat, Alex became concerned when he saw the dog was still there. Other neighbors told him the owners had abandoned the dog a couple of days prior.
Lucky was naturally growing frantic as the minutes passed. Alex realized the dog would die if he didn't intervene. As he told The Dodo:
"I approached him, and he was skittish at first, since his owner had left him high and dry. After I put my hand out and let him get used to me, he calmed down and I pet him. We scooped him up and took him to safety on the boat."
Lucky certainly looks happy and safe lounging on the boat-couch next to his new owner.
Lucky knows a good human when he sees one. Whereas his previous owners didn't think twice about leaving him to die in a flood, Alex went out of his way to save him. So, it's no wonder Lucky won't leave his new owner's side. He found the "cream of the human crop" and he's not ever letting a gem like that get away!
Lucky may have started out with a bad hand, but he must have certainly felt like he hit the jackpot when Alex came to save the day! His previous owners never came forward to claim Lucky, and we're glad that he has a much better outlook in life with his new and loving owner, Alex.
