Brushing out tangled hair is a daily chore for many horse owners. However, a few innovative horse lovers have learned to style their manes in some very interesting and human-like ways.
A Long And Hairy Tradition
Braiding a horse's hair has a long history and tradition. Not just for show, it has practical applications. A whipping horsetail can catch and get tangled.

Legend has it that horse thieves would plait the manes of horses they planned to steal later that night. If this were the work of a horse thief, he must have had a lot of time on his hands.

Folklore says that elves made knots in horse's hair to use them as stirrups. If that's the case, this may have been done by a family of about 20 elves.
Horses don't have nerve endings under their manes, so it doesn't hurt them to have their hair tightly knotted like this. Royal fox hunts dictate that the horse's mane is kept out of the way, so braids like this are common during hunting season.
