It was over a holiday weekend at the beginning of the year when Bella was rushed to the hospital. The toddler was violently ill and, rather than improving over time, she seemed to be getting worse.
Doctors had no idea what was causing Bella to be so sick, and within weeks her condition declined dramatically. The decision was made to put her on life support and Bella was not responsive. Francesca and Lee made the decision to sign a Do Not Resuscitate document, meaning Bella was not to be revived if she were ever to stop breathing.
After they had said their goodbyes, doctors came in to remove Bella's breathing tube. Her time had come, or so they thought. Lee shared what happened over the next few unbelievable seconds.
"I was holding her hand knowing there was going to be a little last breath. I could feel her hand dropping and it went down but then she started gripping my finger."
Unexpectedly, Bella's oxygen levels returned to normal and she was showing signs of a strong effort to stay alive. Her doctors jumped into action, helping the willful little girl recover safely. She was breathing on her own and demonstrating cognitive awareness - her family stood there in disbelief!
Almost a year after her rapid decline, doctors determined Bella suffered from a rare genetic disorder called Biotinidase deficiency - this disorder is so uncommon that it affects just one out of every 60,000 births.
Those who suffer from Biotinidase deficiency do not produce enough of the vitamin Biotin which is needed for healthy cell growth and development. Even though the diagnosis took them all by surprise, there was good news. All Bella would need is a simple biotin supplement, something you can find at almost any health store!
