Selecting a location for your very first home can be challenging; it's just so "permanent," right? Well this young man decided to bypass that huge life decision, and live an unconventional life.
Time for change
Patrick Schmidt was unemployed, living in California, and looking to do something different with his life.
"I decided to check out of the game and live in a bus-home conversion."
That is precisely what Patrick did. He found two buses for sale in a church parking lot, chose bus #5, and the rest is history!
Let the games begin!
Along with the help and support of his father, Patrick began what would become a 3 month project, transforming this school bus into a mobile home.
No going back
After Patrick made this life changing purchase, he drove to his parents' home in Las Vegas to begin the renovation. He and his father jumped in with both pairs of feet and were eager to take on the challenge, together!
Money can't buy...
Cost of bus: $4,500...cost of transformation: $9,000...quality father/son time spent: priceless!
From the bottom up
Brand new flooring can transform any home...even one on wheels!
Mom supports the team
Patrick gives credit where credit is due:
"My mom was right next to us, making sure we had plenty to eat, to drink and anything we needed. I love my parents so much."
No matter how old we get, we still need our mothers!
The dynamic duo worked side by side to ensure that Patrick's new home was fully equipped with air conditioning, storage, a deep sink, a fridge and freezer, a hot and cold shower, a toilet, a water cooler, a portable stove, a fireplace, and a bedroom. What more could you ask for?
On the move
These rooftop solar panels provide Patrick with the energy he'll need for life on the road!
Goodbye bills, hello hills!
Patrick shared in an interview:
"I was tired of wasting money on rent for an apartment that I was never using because I worked so much. It didn't feel natural to spend my free time in my car, to and from work, and feeling too tired on my days off to do anything."
Patrick told his landlord goodbye, and said hello to a life of coasting the hills of this great country!
The ultimate bachelor pad
After three months of hard work, the finished product is simply breathtaking!
The soft, purple LED lights that run the perimeter of Patrick's new home make for a cozy, relaxing environment.
Tiny but complete
This quaint little bathroom may be small, but it has everything! A shower, a toilet, a towel rack, and a door...what more could you ask for?
Home is where the heart is
Patrick opens up:
"I have moved over 20 times since I was born, and I feel like in the bus, I came home."
Patrick's new dining area is the perfect size for enjoying a small dinner alone or for entertaining a guest or two!
A beautiful bus...inside AND out!
The large, open windows of the school bus allow for some incredible views!
The before and after is simply astonishing! Patrick and his father are QUITE the team!
The "license plate" game
Once the bus renovation was complete, Patrick drove cross-country to Florida. He traveled a grand total of 10,000 miles, winding through 30 states, living "the life" in his new home on wheels.
Life on the road
Patrick wants to be able to "pick up and go"...
“That’s kind of the life I’ve imagined for myself. Ride around, travel, find temporary work, and see where to go from there.”
Not everyone is cut out for "life on the road," but for Patrick, it's a dream come true!
A room with an everchanging view
Unlike most of us, Patrick is able to change the scene from his bedroom window as often as he'd like!
Don't let life pass you by...
Time is precious and goes by all too quickly. It's been said, "These are the good old days." So take a page out of Patrick's book and make the most of each day, doing what makes YOU happy!
