She Dips A Ball Of Yard In Glue. How She Shapes It When It Dries Is Completely Unexpected
by FaithTap Staff 11/7/2015
Ready for a truly awesome DIY craft that is easy, quick, and turns out even cooler than anything store bought? It's not too good to be true, but it is a little messy... Let's get started!
Supplies:
First, you will need cotton yarn, Elmer's glue (or Modge Podge), water and a big bouncy ball.
You can find all these supplies at your local craft store, Walmart, or heck, even the dollar store!
Now, with this project, you can make either a globe, a lampshade, or a lantern. If you choose to make a lantern, you will also need things for the light. Don't worry, they are easy to find at your local Home Depot or hardware store.
Additional lampshade supplies include a light bulb, clamp, washer, and electrical cord.
Set these aside, we will get to them later...
Okay, now that we have everything we need, let's get messy!
Step One:
Prep your materials.
You are going to be getting messy with this one. So, prepare your space with garbage bags and towels laid flat on your counter top, as well as this super stylish trash bag "smock." Better safe than sorry!
Mark your bouncy ball.
You will need a large opening on the bottom, and a small one on the top for the cord to come through. Also, don't forget to put a small mark where the ball will deflate, just to remind yourself where it is.
Step Two:
Prepare your glue
You're going to make a 50/50 mixture of glue and water. Not too thick, but not too watery either.
Step Three:
Dip your yarn.
Pull out the beginning of your ball of yarn, then dip the whole thing in the glue mixture.
Wrap the ball.
Here is where the fun begins! Take your gluey, sticky string, and just start wrapping the ball tightly with it. Go from one end to the other, making sure you are leaving the top small hole, and bottom larger hole open.
Pour on extra glue mixture.
Once the ball is fully wrapped and the entire ball of yarn has been used, just pour over the extra glue mixture to really solidify the lampshade, and make it nice and firm.
Let Dry.
Let your lampshade dry for two whole days. Keep it propped on a smaller bowl during this time so that no yarn is actually touching any other surface except the ball.
Step Four:
Deflate the ball.
Using a ball pump needle (if you want to save the ball), or a knife or pair of scissors, you can either deflate the ball or just pop it. You're left with a seriously cool homemade lampshade!
Step Five:
Hook up the light fixture.
If you are making a globe, you can ignore this part. If not, here is how to hook up the electrical part. As mentioned earlier, you will need a hanging electrical cord, an LED light bulb, a 3/8 inch two piece clamp connector, and a one by 3/4 inch washer.
Setup your lamp.
Take your washer and slide it all the way through the cord, to the desired position, then use the clamp to secure it. Next, screw in your light bulb, and VOILA!
