She Didn't Want The Mess Of Carving A Pumpkin - What She Does Instead Is Genius
FaithTap Staff 10/10/2015
If you want to create a cute idea for Halloween, but don't want to put a lot of time into sewing a costume or go through the mess of carving a pumpkin, you will love this simple idea!
Plus, these miniature decorations can be displayed well into November.
Pumpkins can come in all shapes and sizes and this DIY project by Crafts 'n Coffee is just too cute to pass by!
For this project, you will need:
- STYROFOAM™ Brand Foam: 6”, 5” and 4” balls (or other sizes of your choice)
- Fabric (choose a few different prints or colors)
- Pumpkin stems
- Thick, white craft glue
Tools: Scissors, old candle or bar of soap, butter knife, serrated knife, wooden bamboo skewer, and straight pins.
1. Transform a ball of styrofoam!
Start by gliding an old candle or bar of soap over the serrated knife and cut a small slice off of the top of the ball of foam. Slightly press the bottom of the foam ball into the table so that it won't roll around and gently press the edges of the top to make more of a pumpkin shape.
2. Create vertical grooves with a bamboo skewer.
Take the bamboo skewer and slide it down the sides of the pumpkin to create vertical grooves and form different sections, then go over these sections with a serrated knife to make them more distinct.
3. Put colorful fabric over each section.
Cover each section with a rectangular piece of fabric to fit the area. Use straight pins to keep the fabric in place as you cut the fabric to fit the section, then use the knife to tuck the fabric into the grooves.
4. This is starting to look more like mini pumpkins!
If needed, use the straight pins to keep it in place by pushing a few way down into the grooves, so that they are hidden from view.
5. Top it off with a real pumpkin stem.
Place a pumpkin stem on top of your foam pumpkin and glue it in place with white craft glue.
This idea can be used for a variety of fabrics! Here are a few more ideas. Simply follow the instructions for the patchwork pumpkins, but use a different fabric.
Want a cozier, softer pumpkin look?
Try cutting up fabric from an old sweater.
This looks great topped off with a pumpkin stem!
Instead of using white craft glue, use a low temperature glue gun to place the stem on top.
Take another look!
These cute sweater pumpkins are fun autumn decor to add to any room.
Pretty Plaid Pumpkins
Nothing says fall decor like seasonal plaid!
Collect a few old plaid shirts with seasonal fall colors and cut pieces to be used for the fabric.
Add the stem!
Follow the instructions for the patchwork pumpkin and then use a low temperature glue gun to put the pumpkin stem on top.
These plaid pumpkins are a great addition to fall decor!
For a soft, elegant pumpkin decor!
Use velvet or ultra suede fabric and acrylic batting. Directions in laying fabric are slightly different from the patchwork pumpkins. See the full instructions here.
Added a few touches.
Use a low temperature glue gun to add the stem, glue on some velvet leaves, and then curl floral wire around a pencil insert into the top of the pumpkin.
